Betsy L. Kent
Youth Concerto Competition

Betsy L. Kent
October 2019, the Newark Symphony Orchestra Annual Youth Concerto Competition was dedicated to our dear friend and colleague, Betsy L. Kent. Betsy filled numerous roles during her many years associated with the Newark Symphony Orchestra and the Newark Symphony Chorus. She was a reliable and smiling presence, happy to step in and help in any way needed.
Betsy served on the Newark Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors and was one of the original organizers of the Newark Symphony Chorus serving as Chorus Master, rehearsal accompanist, and membership chair. She conducted several Newark Symphony Chamber Concerts, as well.
On the NSO Board, Betsy was a valued member of the NSO Program Committee. Her main passion, though, was Education & Outreach. In that capacity she was responsible for making our Youth Concerto Competition a regionally sought after prize. We will miss you, dear friend.

As a student, Brian has had the privilege to work with musicians Maria Lambros, Michael Kannen, Gerhard Schulz, Richard Oniell, Matthieu Herzog, Mai Motobuchi, Jeffrey Irvine, Matthew Lipman, James Dunham, Che-Yen Chen, Cynthia Phelps, Choong-Jin Chang, and Ben Ullery. Abigail Walton is an active percussionist based in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Beginning her studies on piano at a young age, she later felt drawn towards the dynamic energy of percussion. Inclined towards keyboard percussion, she won first place in the collegiate division of Penn State University’s 2025 Marimba Festival and attended the inaugural 2025 Nashville Marimba Sessions. She is thrilled to share the piece with the Newark Symphony Orchestra.
Passionate about education and pedagogy, Abby teaches at both Mosaic Music Lessons (Phoenixville, PA) and WCU’s Community Music Program. She enjoys successfully preparing students of all ages and abilities for their musical goals, ranging from school talent shows to collegiate auditions. Her other love is for research, seen through her clinic presentation at Penn State University’s 2026 Percussion Festival and participation in WCU’s 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI). Her varied research interests include grades K-3 percussion pedagogy, historically informed performance practice, and feminist musicology.
Abby will graduate from West Chester University with a BM Instrumental Performance in May 2026, where she presently studies with Dr. Ralph Sorrentino and Professor Chandler Beaugrand.
