About the Newark Symphony Orchestra
Our mission is to provide a valued service to the community, by enriching the quality of life through the performance of live orchestral and chamber music, and through music education.
Our vision is to be the Delaware Region’s finest community orchestra of volunteer musicians, making fine musical performances and music education economically accessible to Newark and the surrounding communities.
Our Mission
The Newark Symphony Orchestra (NSO) first rehearsed as a community orchestra in director Harley Hasting’s living room in 1966. In the 60-year history of the orchestra, there have been only two other directors. Roman Pawlowski (1983-2009) brought exciting performances of traditional classical as well as more modern pieces to the concert hall. Simeone Tartaglione (2010 - present) has further expanded the musical range, skill and outreach of the orchestra, which currently includes about 60 musicians from all backgrounds who share a love of classical music.
The NSO performs seven concerts per season. Four of these feature the full orchestra in rich programs of familiar repertoire and other exciting orchestral gems. (You can view some of our past performances on YouTube.) Two chamber concerts provide opportunities to hear more intimate pieces and settings including the NSO chorus and smaller instrumental ensembles. The yearly Family Concert offers fun for all ages in themed performances of pops and light music for young listeners.
The orchestra strives to be Delaware’s finest community orchestra of volunteer musicians, making great music accessible to the community. We hope to enrich the quality of life in this way, encouraging musicians of all ages to play and share their talents. The Betsy Kent Concerto Competition gives high school and college division winners a scholarship and the opportunity to perform with a full orchestral accompaniment annually. The NSO has gifted hundreds of refurbished instruments to students who request them through our Instruments in the Attic program. In addition, we regularly invite young artists to join us in our concerts – collaborations include the Mid Atlantic Ballet, Delaware Dance Company, University of Delaware, Cecil College, Delaware School of Music, and area high schools.
As a non-profit organization, the NSO depends primarily on the generous financial support of our local residents, Delaware arts foundations and corporations, and other sponsors. The Friends of the Newark Symphony Orchestra provides volunteer help and fundraising support. The NSO is governed by a Board of Directors composed of local citizens, business leaders, arts advocates, and orchestra members.
