The Newark Symphony Society was founded in 1973 by Jeannette Woodhouse,
former private and public school music teacher. Its purpose is to
promote the musical and cultural growth of the Newark community through
the support of the Newark Symphony Orchestra. Members attend concerts,
encourage and help with ticket sales, assist in fund raising projects
and enjoy social activities that benefit the orchestra. Under the
strong leadership of past presidents, Jeannette Woodhouse and Marilyn
Minster, the Society has sponsored major fund raising events such as
Art Auctions, Casino Night, Dinner/Theater parties, Luncheons, Bridge
Tournaments, Pre-Concert Lectures, Memorial Concerts, Receptions, Yard
and Bake Sales, and many other activities. An event of note was the
annual Gala for 1986-87, the Constitution Ball. This was held as a
celebration of the 200th anniversary of Delaware's ratifying the
Constitution of the United States. The Ball, held April 11, 1987, was
an evening of Colonial splendor recreated in period food, dance, decor,
and dress. The Constitution Ball required a year's preparation on the
part of many long-standing Symphony Society members such as Marilyn
Minster, Helen Parker, Marilyn Stritzinger, Dot Borcherdt, Gail
Griskowitz, Edie Flessner, Dottie Keihm, and Bernita Gerster, and was a
huge success. The Society, although inactive in the 1994-5 concert
season, has recently resumed activity as a fund raising and audience
building organization under the presidency of Eric Robbins, and is
planning a membership drive, as well as other activities for the
1996-97 Concert season. Anyone interested in information about
membership may call Peggy Schultz, Membership Chair at 368-1887.
